Artificial Intelligence, Herald of Doom, or Peace?

AI as we know it isn't either one. It's currently a prediction tool using the largest library of information available; The Internet.

Understanding what AI truly is, - an LLM or Large Language Model, - is essential to harnessing its benefits while mitigating risks through responsible use.

Common Misconceptions About AI

❌ MYTH

AI Will Replace All Jobs

"AI will make humans obsolete in the workforce"

✓ REALITY

AI creates new job categories while automating repetitive tasks. History shows technology shifts employment, instead of eliminating it entirely.

❌ MYTH

AI Can Think Like Humans

"AI systems understand and reason just like people"

✓ REALITY

An LLM recognizes patterns in data but lacks consciousness, emotions, and true understanding. It processes statistics, not meaning, and can't think unprompted.

❌ MYTH

AI Is Inherently Evil

"AI will inevitably turn against humanity"

✓ REALITY

AI is a tool. Its impact depends entirely on how humans design, train, and deploy it. Values are programmed, not inherent.

❌ MYTH

Larger AI is Better

"More Data = Better AI"

✓ REALITY

While more data can make an AI behave more like a human, it doesn't make the AI more intelligent. The quality of data in the set is often more important.

What AI Can & Cannot Do

✓ AI CAN DO

  • Pattern Recognition: Identify trends in massive datasets
  • Automation: Handle repetitive, well-defined tasks
  • Analysis: Process information faster than humans
  • Prediction: Make statistical forecasts based on historical data
  • Optimization: Find efficient solutions to complex problems

✗ AI CANNOT DO

  • True Understanding: Comprehend meaning, context, or intent
  • Creativity: create an innovative solution to an unsolved problem
  • Consciousness: Feel, experience, or have subjective awareness
  • Common Sense: Apply real-world reasoning outside its training
  • Moral Judgment: Make ethical decisions independently

AI Use Today

Currently, AI is being used to assist experts all over the world by doing things from mapping large proteins to advance the medical field to helping joe smith program his own app.

Project Journey: Obstacles → Solutions

Obstacle 1: JavaScript

In the development of this website, JavaScript was used to add interactivity and dynamic behavior. without AI, The website wouldn't have been completed on-time

AI Solution Used:

I had complete creative control over the structure of the website and even very precise artistic feasibility, however, the one part I couldn't touch with expertise was the JavaScript functionality.

Outcome: The website was completed on-time with the help of AI-assisted JavaScript development, albeit with some limitations.

Obstacle 2: Color & Contrast

I wanted to ensure the website had good color contrast for accessibility, but couldn't quickly determine the best color codes to use without looking them up separately.

AI Solution Used:

I could trust the AI to generate color schemes that met accessibility requirements, while also maintaining a form of artistic control over where these color changes went.

Outcome: I was able to find a fitting color theme and integrate a glowing effect to make the site feel futuristic.

Obstacle 3: Animated Elements

I wanted to add moving elements to the website to make it more engaging and I didn't know much about Javascript.

AI Solution Used:

I could ask the AI agent to program a simple script to achieve my goals.

Outcome: I was able to add smooth animations to the website in several areas, like the animation of each section when it comes into view, or the moving dots in the background (which respond to the cursor's presence).

AI & The Future

Artificial intelligence has been debated rigorously. It's been a central part in many theorist's visions of the future. Weather it beTerminator or the more optimistic visions in The Singularity is Near

Popular Theories of the Future

Singularity Theory

[Theory]

  • Explanation
  • The Singularity is a hypothetical moment in the future where technological advancement is completely uncontrolled by humankind. This leads to unpredictable innovations and potential risks.

  • Time frame
  • The Technological Singularity is a subject of much debate and speculation. The most popular claim, supported by the two books The Singularity Is Near and The Singularity Is Nearer, places the singularity in 2045. just 19 years away.

  • What to watch For
  • AI breakthroughs in the medical field
  • Commercial use of Quantum Computing
  • Promptless AI & AI-Designed AI

Simulation Theory

[Theory]

  • Explanation
  • The Theory suggests that it's possible to create a simulated reality that is completely indistinguishable from "real" reality.

  • Time frame
  • Confermation or creation of a simulated reality will certainly be post-singularity

  • Why does Simulation Theory matter?
  • It varies from person to person, but the implications of a "Simulated Reality" suggest several things :

  • We may already be living in a simulation
  • It may be possible to create a simulated reality in the future
  • Our thoughts and experiences may be able to be manipulated by those in "higher" simulations

Transhumanism

[Ideology]

  • Explanation
  • Transhumanism is an Ideology that argues for the integration of technology with the human body so much so that we "Evolve" beyond the human condition.

  • Time frame
  • Transhumanism is a concept that can only be fully realized post-singularity, most likely requiring advanced technology in fields like gene editing and robotic prosthetics.

  • How does AI tie into it?
  • AI plays a significant role in Transhumanism by providing the technological foundation for enhancing human capabilities. It enables the development of brain-computer interfaces, advanced prosthetics, and cognitive augmentation tools that align with Transhumanist goals.
